Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) is developing a roadmap for 5G network growth.
After some successful trials, the minister of the IT department, Syed Amin-ul Haq, stated that Pakistan plans to launch 5G by December 2022. The government is also considering the ‘Smart Phone for All’ initiative to provide advanced smartphones to 220 million Pakistanis for enhanced connectivity and communication.
Addressing connectivity challenges in remote areas is a priority for the IT ministry, so it launched infrastructure development projects worth PKR 65 billion with the Universal Service Fund (USF), with a deadline of June 2023.
Various networks, like Jazz, Zong, and PTCL, achieved speeds up to 1.6 Gbps in successful trials, signaling progress. However, the 5G launch in Pakistan faced obstacles, including low handset penetration, optic fiber cable scarcity, inflation, low ARPU, rising OPEX, and high taxation.
Therefore, the officials requested that the committee forward recommendations to the government to resolve their problems. Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) are making efforts to overcome economic issues and technical limitations to launch 5G services in Pakistan. Jazz 5G in Pakistan
Jazz is one of the well-known networks in Pakistan that has recently conducted a successful test of the fifth generation of mobile technology at its headquarters in Islamabad.
They achieved download speeds of 1425 Mbps and upload speeds of 68 Mbps, which is over ten times faster than regular 4G speeds. They also demonstrated various 5G applications, including VR/AR gaming, 4K video streaming, and UHD 360 camera usage, preparing for the upcoming launch.

On November 5, 2020, Zong achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting Pakistan’s first international 5G video call from Islamabad to Beijing. In a meeting held in Islamabad on August 29, 2023, it was decided that a 5G bid would occur within the next ten months. The meeting involved the Caretaker Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Dr. Umar Saif, and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman, Maj Gen (R) Hafeezur Rehman.
Discussions focused on telecommunication, the 5G public sale, and spectrum allocation. Dr. Umar Saif emphasized that obstacles in the 5G launching process would be swiftly addressed, including concerns about taxation, the number of telecommunication users, and spectrum allocation, by implementing effective measures to ensure high-quality 5G services for the public.
